THEME: HEART & SOUL
Rock the School Bells is proud to present our 12th annual conference theme as HEART & SOUL. This year we highlighted workshops that support our youth and community in fostering holistic health, healing, and well-being through and with Hip Hop.
Hip Hop emerged out of the inner city amid long-standing social and political violence. As a recreational space and cultural movement, urban youth (specifically black and puerto rican) created Hip Hop out of desire but also, necessity. It was a way to care for each other--a place of safekeeping, resistance, and humanity.
Nearly five decades have passed since the emergence of Hip Hop but our sociopolitical contexts remain the same. Institutions still do not prioritize us. Our communities are still under duress. Keeping our hearts and souls intact is still challenging. Yet, in spite of our existing realities, one way we still know how to care for our communities and selves is through and with Hip Hop.
